Family Separation

It's Not Your Fault

When parents decide not to live together anymore often kids think that it was their fault that their parents broke up. The kids think that they were the reason that their parents don't live together anymore. That makes them feel bad. But they don't have to feel bad. Because it is never the children's fault when parents separate.

Did you ever feel that you caused your parents' separation?
Other children said:

I first thought I was the reason that my parents separated. But it is never the children's fault. It's just because parents can't get along anymore.

I tried to do everything right so my parents would stay together. But then I realized it has nothing to do with me.

Now I know I'm not responsible for my parents separation.

I just talked to my parents and they were so surprised and shocked that I thought it's my fault that they broke up. Now I know better.

I cleaned my room every day and it still didn't make it better. Now I know that it was between my parents and not between them and me.

My brother and I thought it was because we fought a lot but it's normal for kids to fight sometimes.

So you see you are not alone when you are afraid that you have caused your parents separation. A lot of other kids feel the same way.

But always remember:
Children cannot cause a separation. And they cannot make their parents love each other again.

There can be different reasons why parents separate but the children are never the reason. Sometimes parents are not very good in showing their children that it's not their fault. Parents can get angry with their children for no reason and that makes the children think they caused the parents separation. This is not fair from parents because it is never the children's fault when they separate. Parents should let the children know that it is not their fault. Parents might be very busy with their own feelings and feel bad about what is happening too. But they still have to look after their children and shouldn't make them feel bad.
