Separation & Your Family
Changes to your family

When two people with children separate it means the end of an intimate relationship between two parents, two adult partners. It is important to note that it does not mean an end to the relationship between the children and either of their parents, unless such a relationship is unsafe for the children.

A separation is often referred to as a 'family-separation'. Some of us might think that children living with a single parent or moving between the houses of two single parents do not have a proper family. However, a separation involves a 'family-transition'. The family changes form - it does not disappear - when two partners with children separate. Reminding your children and yourself about this can be beneficial. You and your children are still part of a family.

This does not mean that the separation is an easy process for anyone involved. Like lots of other life transitions, it is likely to be a tough period for both your children and you. However there are many ways that you as a parent can help your children to cope with the separation and contribute to his/her long-term well being.
