Leaving a violent relationship
Leaving a violent and abuse situation can be very difficult. It is important to make sure that it happens in a safe way for you and your children. Some people leave from one minute to another, others plan their leave days, weeks, month or even years in advance.
Having a safe place to go to is important. This can be:
- Neighbour or friends and family
- Centrelink
- Families SA
- Police Station
If you don't have alternative accommodation there is separate emergency accommodation available for single women, for women with children as well as single males. These services offer emergency support and are able to link you with other services that can help you to feel safer in the future.
If you and the children need to leave, it might be useful to take some important items with you if you have time, such as:
- Bank books
- Passport
- Driver's License
- Birth Certificates
- Marriage Certificates
- Current Medications
- Money and Credit Cards
- Medicare Cards
- Address books
- Photographs
- Children's toys
- House deeds and insurance documents
Some people are in a hurry and don't have the time to take these items with them or don't know where they are. This is OK and there will be other ways of getting these documents.
In times that are stressful people can forget where they can go and what they need to take. If you fear that you might be in such a situation it can be helpful to make a safety plan. This can be a piece of paper with important contact information including names, telephone numbers and their address of places you can go to. Make sure to keep it at a safe place.
