When one of your parents is hurting the other
Sometimes parents yell, hit or throw things at each other but they are not frightened of each other - that is called conflict. However, when one of your parents hurts, bullies or make the other parent feel scared, humiliated or 'put down' physically, emotionally, socially, financially or sexually, this is called family violence and it can be frightening for children and young people to watch or listen to. Family Violence can happen on different levels and it is NEVER OK. Click here to find out more about it.
Sometimes you might feel like breaking up the fight between your parents so that you can protect the parent who is getting hurt. It is not your role to stop the fighting. It can also be very dangerous and in the end it might be you who gets hurt. There are other things that you can do to make yourself feel safe instead. Click here to find out more. These might, later, also help your parents to solve their problems.
