Restraining Orders
Sometimes when one parent has been violent to the other, one of them will take out a Restraining Order. Restraining Orders are made at a police station and then legalised through the court. They are taken out to protect people from being hurt or harassed. They might say that parents can't be anywhere near each other or that they can't talk to each other on the phone and may need to talk through another person, like a relative or a Lawyer. This can mean that your Mum or Dad may have to make special arrangements to see you, like using a Contact/Handover Centre, or that someone else like your grandparents have to be there or drop you off.
This is what others have said:
"My Dad broke our front door. The Restraining Order says he can't come to the house anymore. Now we meet at the shops."
"Mum kept sending text messages to Dad's new girlfriend. She took out a Restraining Order against Mum and now Dad and his girlfriend don't talk to Mum anymore."
"Mum drops us at the Contact Centre and leaves; then we meet Dad and leave with him. At least they don't fight anymore."
