Parents using drugs

When a parent is taking drugs or drinking too much alcohol, it is normal for their children to feel embarrassed, angry and worried.

If this is happening to you, you might feel these emotions and many more. Maybe it helps to know that there are other children and young people experiencing the same things and having the same feelings.

Remember:
  1. It's not your fault.
  2. You can't stop your parents taking drugs. That's up to them.
  3. It doesn't mean that your parent doesn't love you anymore.
  4. It does mean that you need extra help, especially if you are frightened or you are not being cared for properly.

You might feel that your life is different because of your parent taking drugs. It's not easy to ignore what your parents are doing. You might find that:

  1. you are frightened when your parent is drunk or has taken drugs
  2. your parent warns you not to tell anyone
  3. things don't get done at home, such as housework or cooking.
  4. your school work suffers
  5. you can't ask friends home
  6. you lose contact with your friends
  7. you feel depressed
  8. you just want to run away
  9. you start drinking or taking drugs yourself

Even if it's difficult, it is important that you concentrate on YOUR life now and do some things that are good for you. Think about what you liked to do before the problems started and try to do the things you enjoy. Your parent is an adult - children should not have to feel responsible for their parents. As a child you have a right to be cared for.

Don't be embarrassed about letting people know what's happening in your life, such as friends, grandparents, your doctor, your teacher or counsellor at your school. It will make you feel less alone and they might be able to help you and get help for your parent.
